‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s road from gurney to goals with Athletic Bilbao
The debut appearance the Athletic striker featured in the UK, an 18-year-old representing Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in September 2015, he hit the target. On his next visit he played in British turf, against the Black Cats weeks after, he netted. The third time, against Manchester City six weeks after that, sure enough, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to Manchester to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he scored again. A spectacular strike, also. “In fact,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they substituted him.
“I was furious,” the attacker reveals, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I performed well. They didn’t let me play the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about Man United, the typical thing. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the training ground, Bilbao, the early training is about to start; after it, the short journey to Loiu airport and another trip to the UK, now to take on the Magpies in the UCL on the upcoming match. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a tough year for the club, partly because of the requirements of being here. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and been defeated by Arsenal and Dortmund in the continental stage. However, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.
In the 36 months since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway surrounded by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in a long wait. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and debuting in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
Guruzeta thought it hard enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. As the child of the ex-La Real star Xabi Guruzeta and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that nurtured the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he suffered a serious knee problem, being released, a relegation and a call back before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to experience the peak of his career.
“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the top level but with every stage you go through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his first game and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and my knee gave way.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it shifted the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it aids growth. You develop habits new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then go home, as a youngster does. At the complex, all resources are available, so do everything. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.
“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles repeatedly. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. So what happens, happens. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. The setback taught me. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”
Game time is essential. He left in tears in that year, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in that season, he got three strikes in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the following period, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and should the time come they need someone in your position, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks savor the moment. Especially after the prior campaign which, at times, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
